Module Description: This module provides an overview of four principles that may play an important role in facilitating behavior change among individuals presenting with substance use disorders.  The combination of psychosocial and medication for addiction treatment protocols can provide an additive benefit to individuals striving to alter the substance use. Empirically supported treatments vary in their theoretical orientation and the emphasis they place on specific dimensions of the change process.  However, many interventions address four important components of evidence-based support. Developing a psychosocial treatment plan that addresses these four components (i.e. coping skills, competing reinforcers, how individuals talk about their change plan, and utilizing social supports) can enhance the overall effectiveness of a MAT protocol.  This module also outlines the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach to treatment, a particularly effective framework for helping families affected by substance use disorders and seeking to engage their loved one in the treatment process.
