Morbidity and mortality related to methamphetamine use have been escalating dramatically. While these shifts began before fentanyl was established as a street opioid, trends have become even more profoundly concerning as fentanyl has come to dominate most markets around the United States. Treatment of methamphetamine use disorder is limited, with strong data for contingency management and modest data for a growing number of medications. This activity will review available treatment options and future possibilities for addressing an escalating trend in methamphetamine mortality and morbidity. Since the concept of methamphetamine or stimulant overdose is often overlooked or difficult to assess, especially in comparison to the trademark signs of opioid overdose like respiratory depression, this webinar will illustrate the symptoms of acute stimulant toxicity events and the medical interventions necessary to treat them. Learners will gain a better understanding of the intersections between stimulant use and opioid use disorder and how to best recognize overdose events related to polysubstance use.
