Improving Implementation of Substance Use Disorder Services: Implementation Science Foundations
SUD 101 Core Curriculum Overview

Curriculum overview:  While healthcare professionals are often on the front lines of treating substance use disorders, most have limited (if any) training in this area. The SUD 101 Core Curriculum was created to provide a foundation of the current research, resources, and support needed to increase healthcare professionals’ competence and confidence in the care of their patients across the continuum of care. This activity, Improving Implementation of Substance Use Disorder Services: Implementation Science Foundations, is part of the 23-module curriculum. Please see below for a summary of module 23 out of 23:
Module 23 Overview
Title: Improving Implementation of Substance Use Disorder Services: Implementation Science Foundations

Presenter(s):
Aimee Campbell, PhD, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry and New York State Psychiatric Institute

Module Description: Successfully implementing substance use disorder best practices continues to be a challenge across healthcare settings, often due to limited understanding of barriers and facilitators and a lack of systematic planning. This module introduces, defines, and discusses key implementation science models and strategies that can support the successful integration of substance use disorder treatment best practices into diverse community health and addiction settings. Real-world examples from implementation practice for integrating medications for opioid use disorder are used to demonstrate how this information can be used in daily practice.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify and define key Implementation Science elements
  • Recognize common constructs from conceptual frameworks and models utilized in Implementation Science
  • Identify and develop Implementation Science outcomes
  • Describe ways in which Implementation Science can inform implementation practice for the integration of evidence-based substance use disorder services
