Introduction to the Criminal Justice System and MOUD
SUD 101 Core Curriculum Overview

Curriculum overview:  While healthcare professionals are often on the front lines of treating substance use disorders, most have limited (if any) training in this area. The SUD 101 Core Curriculum was created to provide a foundation of the current research, resources, and support needed to increase healthcare professionals’ competence and confidence in the care of their patients across the continuum of care. This activity, Introduction to the Criminal Justice System and MOUD, is part of the 23-module curriculum. Please see below for a summary of module 21 out of 23:
Module 21 Overview
Title: Introduction to the Criminal Justice System and MOUD

Presenter(s):
Debra A. Pinals, M.D., Director, Program in Psychiatry, Law, and Ethics, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of Michigan

Module Description:  There continues to be an over-representation of individuals with substance use disorders in the criminal justice system. This includes individuals with opioid use disorders in need of Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD). Healthcare practitioners treating justice-involved patients may have limited information about how the criminal justice system is constructed and how best to help their patients who are at risk for disruption in care and treatment due to arrest, court oversight and incarceration. This information can be helpful given challenges when MOUD becomes difficult to access due to the constraints of the justice system. Although the justice system is becoming more aware of the importance of MOUD, to best support patients it is equally important for healthcare providers to gain a stronger awareness of the justice system. This educational activity provides an overview and basic information about the criminal justice system from arrest to incarceration to re-entry.

Educational Objectives:

  • Describe police lock up, jails, prisons, court systems, probation, and parole
  • Discuss pathways for persons with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) who encounter the criminal justice system and importance of MOUD (Medications for OUD)  across systems of care
  • Describe opportunities for the MOUD provider working with justice-involved individuals to enhance treatment outcomes
