Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain: The CDC Guideline in Practice
Description
In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control released the Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. The guideline was developed to provide recommendations for primary care clinicians who prescribe opioids for chronic non-malignant pain in the United States, yet many clinicians still do not utilize these recommendations in their practices. This module uses cases to describe these guidelines and offer applications for clinical practice. Resources for using the guideline are also cited and reviewed.

The target audience for this module is primary care physicians.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

  • Apply the 2016 CDC Guideline in clinical practice
  • Differentiate clinical situations in which the guideline may or may not be applicable
  • Use CDC resources to provide an informed, systems based approach to prescribing opioids for chronic pain

Method of participation in the activity

In order to receive maximum credit, learners must: 

1. Review the materials provided in this module.
2. Earn a minimum cumulative score of 80% on the post-test. 
3. Complete an evaluation to assess satisfaction and plans for individual and/or team practice change.
4. Follow instructions at the end of the course regarding how to retrieve a certificate.* 

*Credit will not be awarded unless all components of the program are completed.  Partial credit will not be awarded.
