Module 10: Helping Patients Get to and Utilize Twelve-Step Programs
Description
Twelve Step programs (Alcoholic Anonymous and others) are ubiquitous across the United States and are found in small, medium, and large cities. They can be a great addition to treatment plans and extend the reach of the physician by providing their patients paths to recovery, sober social support, and valuable skills. This presentation provides education about what 12 step programs are and how the physician can help their patients get to and best utilize these programs, including for those patients taking medications.
Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams who are treating patients with substance use disorder (SUD).

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

  • Identify which patients have the best chances of “sticking” with 12 step meetings
  • Describe 12 step facilitation, an evidence-based practice for alcohol use disorder, but adjust for persons with opioid use disorders on medications 
  • Develop strategies to interact with patients around 12 step meetings to enhance treatment participation and outcomes

In order to receive maximum credit, learners must: 

1. Review the materials provided in this module.
2. Earn a minimum cumulative score of 80% on the post-test. 
3. Complete an evaluation to assess satisfaction and plans for individual and/or team practice change.
4. Follow instructions at the end of the course regarding how to retrieve a certificate.* 

*Credit will not be awarded unless all components of the program are completed.  Partial credit will not be awarded.
