In any training situation, I prefer to introduce myself, which is a greatly reduced version of the Bio listed below. Ed Johnson has been a person in long term recovery from substance use disorders for forty years. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a master’s degree in clinical counseling from the Citadel. Ed is currently working as an addiction treatment and recovery related trainer and consultant. He recently retired after fourteen years working for the Southeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Southeast ATTC) located at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta where he served as the Associate Director for Training and Technical Assistance. For the twenty years prior to his work at Southeast ATTC, he held various clinical positions at Charleston Center (Charleston (SC) County Department of Addiction Treatment Services) the last ten years serving as Program Administrator for the Opioid Treatment and Infectious Disease Services Program. He has provided numerous trainings in the Southeast on Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care, Professional Ethics, HIV / Addiction, Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), Treatment and issues related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Individuals and Addiction, Clinical and Recovery Coach Supervision and Recovery Focused Language and Stigma Reduction. He is currently credentialed / licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) Licensed Addiction Counselor Supervisor (LACS), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CS), Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) and Certified Peer Supervisor (CPS). He was one of the 2012 recipients of the Nyswander-Dole award presented by the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD) and in 2023 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Addiction Professionals of South Carolina (APSC). Ed is a lifelong fan of the “Wizard of Oz” and musical theater, a U.S. Navy Veteran and proud Dog Dad (Darla) and Parrot Pop (Ralph and Pedro).
Brief Description:
This 1-hour webinar provides an overview of the recognized stages of recovery from Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Participants will learn how individuals progress through early, middle, and long-term recovery, the emotional and behavioral milestones within each stage, and evidence-informed strategies for supporting recovery at every step. Designed for providers, peer specialists, case managers, and community partners, this session highlights practical tools for engagement, relapse prevention, and promoting sustainable recovery.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and describe the core stages of OUD/SUD recovery, including early stabilization, sustained recovery, and long-term maintenance.
- Recognize common challenges, needs, and motivational factors individuals experience at each stage of the recovery process.
- Apply stage-specific strategies and supportive practices to enhance engagement, reduce relapse risk, and promote ongoing recovery success.
