APC: Psychedelic Facilitated Psychotherapy for Addiction

Dr. Stauffer is a psychiatrist and addiction medicine physician who primarily treats Veteran and LGBTQ+ populations with PTSD and substance use disorders. Dr. Stauffer is Director of the Social Neuroscience & Psychotherapy Lab, which aims to maximize the benefits of psychotherapy through the adjunct use of social psychopharmacology, such as oxytocin, MDMA, and psilocybin. Dr. Stauffer has been in the Investigator, Study Physician, and Study Therapist roles for several clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and has served in curriculum development, teaching, supervision, and mentorship roles for several psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy certification programs. 

 

Overview and Learning Objectives

Abstract:
As research on the potential of therapeutic use of psychedelics in psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment grows, it is critical that addiction psychiatrists are knowledgeable about the history of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, the current research base, and potential risks and benefits related to the use of psychedelics as an adjunct to psychotherapy. We are excited that Dr. Stauffer, who has extensive experience in this area as a clinician, researcher, mentor, and teacher, including as a Supervisor and Trainer for MAPS’ MDMA Therapy Training Program, will be presenting on this important and exciting topic.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the history of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy clinical research
  • Assess existing literature and follow ongoing research on the use of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy to treat substance use disorders
  • Explore the ever-changing landscape of training and certification for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy
