Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Overview: SUD for the Healthcare Team is an introductory-level course on substance use disorders designed to provide fundamental information for all staff working within a health care setting.  The four modules, taken together, present information on SUD, its history and its treatment, including alcohol and opioid use disorders. 

This curriculum is made up of four 1-hour modules. You may choose to complete the modules individually, however learners are strongly encouraged to complete all four modules in order as some of the content builds on information presented in prior modules. Learners will receive credit for the completion of each individual module. 

Module Overview
This curriculum is made up of four 1-hour modules. Please see below for a summary of each course:
Understanding Substance Use Disorders
Module 1 provides a basic introduction of the concepts of the disease of addiction and the role of the reward system. Using neuroscience concepts as a foundation, clinical manifestations of the disease of addiction are then discussed in the form of case-based presentations.  


Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders
Module 2 outlines the basic concepts of alcohol and drug use disorders. Standard drink sizes, screening for alcohol use disorders and an introduction to alcohol withdrawal management are discussed. A basic overview of the major drug use disorders are then discussed in a clinically-relevant manner. 


The History and Defining Features of the Current Opioid Epidemic
Module 3 provides an overview of the history of opioid use with an overview of contributing factors to the current epidemic. Using clinical cases, opioid use disorder is then discussed in detail. Finally, there is a discussion of harm reduction approaches and treatment options.

Medication and Behavioral Treatment of Substance Use Disorders
Module 4 introduces evidence-based clinical practices of pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatments for substance use disorders. Off label medications and psychosocial support programs are also discussed.

Physicians, nurse practitioners or other advanced practice nurses, PAs, social workers, pharmacists and the healthcare team.

Credit Designations Available per one-hour activity
