Standard Medical Management for Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care
SUD 101 Core Curriculum Overview

Curriculum overview:  While healthcare professionals are often on the front lines of treating substance use disorders, most have limited (if any) training in this area. The SUD 101 Core Curriculum was created to provide a foundation of the current research, resources, and support needed to increase healthcare professionals’ competence and confidence in the care of their patients across the continuum of care. This activity, Standard Medical Management for Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care, is part of the 23-module curriculum. Please see below for a summary of module 8 out of 23:
Module 8 Overview
Title: Standard Medical Management for Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care

Presenter(s):
  Brent Moore, Ph.D., Yale School of Medicine

Module Description: Utilization of evidence-based counseling to effectively manage primary care patients with Opioid Use Disorders (OUD) provides the best chance of improving motivation for change, treatment engagement and ultimate remission. Standard Medical Management (SMM) is one such option that can be used that is efficient, focused, and relatively easily integrated into primary care practice. The goal of this module is to prepare participants to deliver the assessment and treatment components of the initial and subsequent 15-minute SMM sessions. Participants will also review brief motivational strategies to manage resistance and/or lack of progress, as well as common issues when treating OUD.

Educational Objectives:

  • Goal of this learning activity - the provision of evidence-based treatment (EBT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in Primary Care (PC) settings
  • At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to describe how to:
    • Implement Standard Medical Management (SMM) for patients with OUD in PC settings
    • Address common issues in treating OUD in PC
