About: These trainings provide you with an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues. We will explore the potential impact of these issues on our beliefs towards those with backgrounds different from our own and how those beliefs can impact the people we serve and the continuum of care for substance use disorder. This training is an opportunity to reflect on ways to create more welcoming and inclusive places of business for our staff and clients, as well as look at ways organizations can support DEI efforts.

 

Learning Objectives:

Session 1:

  • Review and define terms related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
  • Explore data on the impact of DEI issues on health care access, experiences, and outcomes
  • Describe the importance of integrating DEI into organizations.
  • Describe how social determinants can explain disparities in disease prevalence and the recovery continuum.
  • Outline the meaning of DEI for approaching SUD and OUD prevention, treatment, and recovery.
  • Analyze myths and misconceptions around DEI.
  • Analyze microaggressions and how to address them individually and organizationally.
  • Analyze the intersection and impact of systemic racism and drug policy.

Session 2:

  • Review and define how racial inequities impact health outcomes.
  • Review and define how racial inequities impact the delivery of our healthcare services.
  • Review and analyze how racial inequities relate to substance use and substance use disorder (SUD) historically and now.
  • Assess how systems of oppression and privilege impact SUD treatment delivery.
  • Describe Hay’s ADDRESSING model and assess the implications for your professional life.
  • Discuss real world implications of racism for people in recovery.
  • Outline individual action steps for being anti-racist.
  • Outline anti-racism organizational steps.
  • Outline leadership strategies for addressing racial equity.
  • Know how to access resources to support racial equity capacity building.
