Wound Care Curriculum Modules 1 and 2: Xylazine and Wound Care Education

About:

Module 1: In this module, we will provide an overview of Xylazine, including information on its emergence in the local drug supply and its effect on persons who use drugs (PWUD). This includes an emphasis on the unique impact of Xylazine as it pertains to overdose risk, overdose response, and the development of soft skin tissue infections.
Module 2: This module will further your knowledge and experience regarding wound care intervention for persons who use drugs (PWUD). This includes an overview of best practices for screening and identifying wounds, as well as best practices for basic wound care intervention that could be administered by non-medically trained personnel in the context of routine outreach.


Learning Objectives:

Module 1:
      1. What is Xylazine?
      2. Overview of Xylazine's unique impact on wounds
      3. Emerging trends regarding Xylazine (prevalence in supply)
      4. Testing the supply for Xylazine
      5. Xylazine's impact on overdose
      6. Implications for overdose reversal with Narcan
Module 2:
      1. “Basic” wound care assessment 
      2. Phases of wound healing 
      3. Differentiate between healthy and wounds requiring treatment.
      4. Demonstrate basic wound care using a wound care kit.
      5. Discuss harm reduction strategies to reduce the risk of wounds.
