Trauma Informed Care for Women with SUDs by Candy ...
Trauma Informed Care for Women with SUDs by Candy Stockton-Joreteg, MD for West Midtown Medical Group
Course Overview
Presenter: Candy Stockton-Joreteg, MD
Description:
Women with substance use disorders (SUD) have a higher risk than males of developing trauma and stress disorders (including PTSD). While trauma can manifest itself in many ways, women with SUD also carry a higher risk of related adverse effects such as homelessness, physical and mental health, amongst other barriers to care. This training will focus on gender specific and trauma informed approaches to build resilience, offer coping skills, and review emotional regulation activities. When traumatized women with SUD are supported, it can foster a sense of safety and belonging, and consequently making it easier for women to seek help and access appropriate resources.
Learning Objectives:
1. Define trauma-informed care
2. List common trauma factors among women with SUDs
3. Understand problematic behaviors in light of the fight, flight or freeze response to danger
4. List pregnancy-specific barriers to seeking care
5. Explain parallels between SUDs and other chronic diseases that complicate pregnancy
