Course Title: Opioids for Pain: Understanding and Mitigating Risks

Course Description: Opioids are commonly prescribed for chronic pain, but are also associated with a risk for serious harms, including overdose and opioid use disorder. This course reviews risk factors for opioid misuse, opioid use disorder, and overdose in patients with chronic pain, explains methods for screening and assessing for problematic opioid use, reviews methods for mitigating risks associated with prescribed opioids, and details non-opioid treatment approaches for pain. The course is based on principles in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s guideline on opioids for chronic pain and reviews recent evidence on benefits and harms of opioids.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Identify risk factors for opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and overdose in patients with chronic pain
Practice methods for screening and assessment for problematic opioid use and mitigating risks of opioids
Implement non-opioid treatment strategies to manage patients with chronic pain

Curriculum Overview: Healthcare professionals are often on the front lines of treating substance use disorders (SUDs), yet many have limited formal training in this area. The SUD 101 Core Curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in current research, evidence-based practices, and available resources.

The curriculum includes:

Foundational Courses: Eight interactive, case-based courses that simulate real-world clinical scenarios and provide foundational SUD training
Supplemental Courses: These courses offer a deeper exploration of specialized topics and expand on core concepts

Together, these courses enhance healthcare professionals’ competence and confidence in caring for patients with SUDs across the continuum of care, with a particular focus on opioid use disorders (OUD).
