Course Title:
Best Clinical Practices for Treating Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period

Presenter(s):
Hendrée E Jones, PhD, LP

Course Description: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) among women who become pregnant is increasing in prevalence in clinical settings. The standard of care is to provide buprenorphine or methadone as part of a complete treatment approach during pregnancy and beyond the postpartum period. This course reviews the historical and current context of opioid use of women during pregnancy. It compares pharmacological treatment options for OUD and discusses issues with detoxification or medically assisted withdrawal from opioids during pregnancy. Topics related to the treatment of OUD during pregnancy and in the postpartum period for the mother, fetus, and child will also be discussed (e.g., induction, dosing, pain management, neonatal withdrawal and how to reduce its severity). The learner will follow the case study of Ashley during her pregnancy and the birth of her baby, and will engage in reflection and knowledge check questions.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the historical and current context of pregnant women in the opioid crisis
  • Compare and contrast the differing approaches of treating pregnant patients with opioiduse disorder (OUD) with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) or using medicationto initiate withdrawal

  • Demonstrate the risks and benefits of methadone and buprenorphine treatment during pregnancy for the mother and the child
  • Develop a patient-centered plan to provide postpartum care and plan for any neonatalabstinence syndrome (NAS)/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) in the infant

Curriculum Overview: Healthcare professionals are often on the front lines of treating substance use disorders (SUDs), yet many have limited formal training in this area. The SUD 101 Core Curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in current research, evidence-based practices, and available resources.

The curriculum includes:

  • Foundational Courses: Eight interactive, case-based courses that simulate real-world clinical scenarios and provide foundational SUD training
  • Supplemental Courses: These courses offer a deeper exploration of specialized topics and expand on core concepts

Together, these courses enhance healthcare professionals’ competence and confidence in caring for patients with SUDs across the continuum of care, with a particular focus on opioid use disorders (OUD).

This is a supplemental course within the SUD 101 Core Curriculum. Visit the SUD 101 Core Curriculum page to explore additional educational trainings as new courses become available.

Course Components:

  • Interactive learning: interactive presentation with knowledge checks and reflection questions.
  • Resources: Downloadable slide deck, resource links, references, and mentorship opportunities.
  • Team-based takeaway guide: This tool provides important course takeaways from and for specific members of the team. It was designed to help the team learn from and about one another.
  • Accredited CE credits: A certificate following completion of the course
