Webinar Description: This webinar focused on the crucial role of the emergency department (ED) in recognizing and treating opioid use disorder (OUD) patients with evidence-based medications for addiction treatment. Arianna Campbell, DMSc, MPH, PA-C, CAQ-EM, DFAAPA reviewed the evidence for initiating ED buprenorphine treatment with patients presenting with opioid use disorder, along with practical approaches for team-based initiation and care in this setting. This presentation outlined components of successful integration of an ED program with community partnerships, current research by emergency physicians regarding innovative strategies, and how to utilize strategies like high-dose buprenorphine inductions and use of extended release 7-day formulation of buprenorphine. Initiation of buprenorphine effectively reduces withdrawal symptoms, improves adherence to treatment, and saves lives.

• Summarize the evidence supporting the initiation of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) within the emergency department (ED) setting, emphasizing a team-based approach.
• Distinguish among intervention strategies for initiating buprenorphine aimed at recovering opioid sensitivity.
• Develop a plan for integrating emerging team-based practices in ED-based buprenorphine initiation, including the administration of XR buprenorphine.
