Opioid Use Disorder/Substance Use Disorder 101

Presenter Bio(s): Dr. Carl Highshaw is the Founder and President of the AMAAD (Arming Minorities Against Addiction & Disease). Dr. Highshaw fully developed the AMAAD Institute as a local grassroots community-based organization (CBO) in the provision of integrated social work-related services that prioritizes Black LGBTQ+ people. With more than twenty-five years of nonprofit program and administrative management experience, Dr. Highshaw completed his Bachelor of Psychology from Western Illinois University, his Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and his Doctor of Social Work (DSW) from the University of Southern California. Highshaw also received a substance use disorder (SUD) Certification from the Los Angeles Training Institute for Drug and Alcohol Counseling as well as a Human Resources Management Certification from California Statement University-Dominguez Hills. 

 

Course Overview
Course objectives:
    1. Discuss the impact of substance use and key points of consideration related to addiction.
    2. Describe risk factors for substance use and substance use disorder.
    3. Identify strategies to reduce the harmful effects of substance use and review things to consider related to providing support.
