Webinar Description:
Substance use disorders and opioid use disorders are more common in LGBTQ+ individuals with comorbid mental illness. In addition, many treatment programs do not have culturally sensitive resources to treat LGBTQ+ patients adequately. They are unaware of resources available for those with other underlying conditions or adverse histories. Micro-aggressions and discrimination in MOUD practice can negatively impact treatment and recovery from substance use disorders. Therefore, it is essential for practitioners to have a greater understanding of this minority population.
Educational Objectives:
- Cite two specific interventions clinicians can use to create a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ patients.
- Describe three mental health and substance use challenges that are unique to the LGBTQ+ community
- Review ways in which one's sexual orientation and gender identity/expression may affect a patient's treatment/recovery from substance use disorders, like opioid use disorder.
- Discuss culturally informed and culturally sensitive counseling for LGBTQ+ individuals.
