Engaging youth and their caregivers in medication treatment for opioid use disorders
Course Overview
Presenter: Dr. Amy Yule is board certified in adult, child, and addiction psychiatry. She is the Vice Chair of Addiction Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center and an Associate Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Yule has NIH funding to examine interventions to prevent substance use disorders in youth with psychiatric disorders, and her research is focused on co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. She also works with youth with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric disorders as well as their family in a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic.


About: This presentation will help clinicians understand differences between FDA approved medications for opioid use disorders. Clinicians who work with youth will also feel prepared to incorporate developmental considerations into discussions and recommendations for medication for opioid use disorders when engaging youth and their caregivers. Lastly, harm reduction practices that are important to discuss with youth who misuse opioids will be reviewed.

•Define differences in the mechanism of action for medication for opioid use disorders (OUD).

•Describe differences relative to adults in how to approach and engage youth and their caregivers in discussions regarding medication for opioid use disorder

•Review harm reduction practices to discuss with youth who misuse opioids.
