Course Overview
Presenter:
Christina Boyd, LSCSW, LCAC, is currently an Associate Professor of Practice for the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. She is a master trainer for the ATTC network and serves as a content expert on prevention with the Opioid Response Network State Targeted Response. Christina has worked in several behavioral health settings in rural areas of the country over the last 26 years.
About:
Staff at this community mental health center need training on Motivational Interviewing philosophy and techniques to better serve and communicate with people experiencing homelessness and people living with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse diagnoses.
Course 1 Learning Objectives:
Understand the foundational principles and skills of Motivational Interviewing and how they can help to connect participants to care and treatment
Identify ways that stigma and bias may impact the recovery of someone who has a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder
Understand how an approach to care utilizing MI can coordinate well with harm reduction strategies that are evidenced based and effective in engaging and maintaining individuals in care
Utilize the basic skills of MI in order to help facilitate difficult conversations with individuals in services and others who may present in crisis in a meaningful way
Apply Motivational Interviewing skills when collaborating with individuals to create person-centered treatment planning
