Now that you've joined the coalition, you may get asked, what is the Opioid Response Network? In short, ORN is an alliance of interprofessional health, behavioral health, prevention, harm reduction, recovery, and justice organizations. Established in 2018, ORN was created through a grant awarded to the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, or AAAP, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, known as SAMHSA. Ongoing funding from SAMHSA has allowed AAAP to lead the network in close collaboration with the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Columbia University. ORN is a resource for anyone seeking opioid response education and training opportunities. This may include healthcare workers, justice-related professionals, educators, and more. One of our core missions is building sustainable solutions for communities, so our training and education are delivered by consultants familiar with, and local to, the communities they serve. Technical assistance, also known as TA, is the process of providing targeted support to an organization with a development need or problem. It is an effective method for building the capacity of an organization. ORN provides TA on issues related to substance use to anyone seeking it, with our work, process, and protocols guided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. At the core of our efforts are guiding principles, which inform how staff and consultants should approach their work, falling into foundational pillars, prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery, and health equity. The guiding principles are outlined in a supplemental PDF provided with this unit. To test your comprehension, be sure to take the Unit 2 quiz.
