Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of the Waiver Eligibility Training Module 2, which focuses on Evidence-Based Counseling for opioid use disorders. The objectives of the training are to outline the key components of behavior, describe various evidence-based counseling approaches, and explain the core principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI).

The psychosocial treatment for opioid use disorders includes practicing alternative behaviors, managing the environment, addressing triggers, and considering associated depression and anxiety. Pharmacological treatment involves preventing withdrawal and reducing the biological drive for drug use.

Various evidence-based counseling approaches for opioid use disorders include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Medication Management, Mutual Support Groups (e.g., AA, NA, Smart Recovery), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). CBT is based on social learning theories and principles of operant conditioning, focusing on functional analysis of drug use and providing skills training to recognize and cope with high-risk situations. Medication Management involves monitoring self-reported use, lab markers, adherence, response, adverse effects, educating about SUD consequences and treatments, and encouraging abstinence and use of community supports. Mutual Support Groups provide a support network for patients, and AA meetings are often attended by patients with opioid use disorder. SMART Recovery is a secular-based program using stages of change, MI, and CBT.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation style designed to strengthen a person's motivation and commitment to change. It involves open-ended questions, affirming, reflecting, and summarizing. The four processes in MI are engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning.

Overall, the training emphasizes understanding behavior, utilizing evidence-based counseling approaches, and implementing MI techniques to effectively support individuals with opioid use disorders in their recovery journey.
