Pdf Summary
This document summarizes the findings from a narrative literature review conducted to understand nurses' practices with persons experiencing opioid use disorder (OUD). The review aims to identify how nurses' actions, practices, and work have been presented in the literature and summarize the characteristics of the research studies in which these appear.

The literature search was conducted between June and December 2019 using various databases and inclusion criteria. The analysis involved reading entire articles and creating an evidence table. The purpose statements of the selected studies were examined, and key words were categorized and described.

The findings show that the number of published studies on nurses' practices with OUD has increased over the decades, with the most publications occurring between 2000 and 2018. However, few studies were designed specifically to describe nurses' practices.

The results of the studies identified various nursing practices related to assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Nursing standards of practice for addictions nursing were used to label these practices. The specificity of practices varied, and there was a lack of focus on identifying outcomes.

The limitations of the review include the omission of certain keywords and the restriction to published research articles in full-text format. The discussion emphasizes the need for more research on nurses' practices, the development of new theories to guide practice, and the articulation of specific competencies associated with each practice standard.

In conclusion, understanding and expanding nurses' practices in treating persons with OUD is important in addressing the opioid epidemic. Further research and testing of specific practices and competencies are needed to fully utilize the knowledge and contributions of nurses in OUD treatment.
